Either the film will sink into your skin like a slow ache or it will be bewildering and downright boring. Kiran Raos first film is an atmospheric mood piece. There is no overt plot“ four lives randomly connect in Mumbai. There are fleeting moments of happiness and pain and the eventual realisation that the journey never ends. The struggle to survive and to connect is eternal. The characters are Shai, played by Monica Dogra, an NRI investment banker who is back in Mumbai for, she says, a change of pace. Arun, played by Aamir Khan, an angst-ridden artist who has a one-night stand with Shai but has little affection or time for her the next morning. The last time I felt someone did justice in describing this unusual city was while reading the book 'Shantaram'. I feel bad for Kiran Rao, the director, because I have no idea just how she can ever top this. The story revolves around four wonderfully intriguing characters, and not for one moment, is your mind distracted with the usual questions of what time it is, who's holding the popcorn or why the hell is it so damn cold in the theatre. Prateik is amazing, Kirti is endearing, Monica is inspiring, and Aamir is simply Aamir. I will watch this movie a few times over, if only to make sure I haven't missed out on anything, especially the subtleties of each relationship What more can I say? 10/10 is simply not enough. | Rummana Ahmed | Kiran Rao made it quite clear before the release that 'Dhobi Ghat' is not your typical mainstream Hindi film. Kiran Rao's approach and narrative is more documentary film style than conventional Bollwyood story-telling. 'Dhobi Ghat' is a collage of four different stories woven together to tell an unconventional tale. Arun (Aamir Khan) is a painter, whimsical, intense and a loner. Munna (Prateik) is the 'dhobi' who aspires to become an actor. Shai (Monica Dogra) is an investment banker back from the US, on a sabbatical and pursuing her hobby, photography. Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra) is from a small village in U.P., in Mumbai after her marriage. So, how are there lives linked? | Kunal Guha | So, the movie is about four unrelated characters, who happen to discover each other accidently and then continue leading their lives just as they were before. So basically, if they hadn't met, the result of this film would remain unchanged (right?). Anyway, Arun (Aamir Khan), a suave smoker and artist (in that order), has an overnight hump and dump with Shai (Monica Dogra), an NRI investment banker who wants to capture 'poor India, hungry India' (she puts it in more sophisticated words). Shai is also not shy in inviting her Dhobi, Munna (Prateik Babbar) home for tea and then goes ahead to shoot his portfolio, as he wants to be an actor (when will all the Mumbai underdogs give up on their acting dreams?). While Shai is busy scanning the bylanes of Mumbai with her camera, Arun gets deeply tangled with his new muse, Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra), whose depressing story is filmed in abandoned tapes that he discovers in his newly rented apartment. And then director Kiran Rao lost her pencil. So let's copy-paste the above paragraph two more times and there you go, 95 minutes of your life have been swiped. | |
