2010 Tough Guy challenge: 5,000 of the world's strongest battle cold, fire,

each other for title By Neil Nagraj

More than 5,000 wanna-be tough guys –  and gals – from around the world descended on England Sunday, battling mud, ice, fire, and frigid temperatures in a bid to finish the 24th annual Tough Guy challenge.

About 4,600 of the participants completed the 8-mile obstacle course, a trial that has been dubbed the world's "most dangerous taste of mental and physical pain," the BBC reports.

Proceeds from the event, held in Perton, Staffordshire, are donated to charity.

Among the challenges participants face are leaps over pits of fire, swims through pools of mud, and a climb over an electrified fence called "The Tiger."

"There is nothing like this in the world, and that is why people from all over the globe want to come here," event organizer Mouser Wilson told London's Daily Mail.

"Every year there's something new –  we have a zip-line this year which takes you down a 1,000 meters very quickly and if you don't let go above the water, you'll go straight into the wall . . . We had a fair few broken bones."

But many participants view the perilous course as "a journey of self discovery," Wilson told the Daily Mail.

And 32-year-old Lima Posthewaite of Bristol agrees.

"Every single inch of you aches afterwards, but the sense of achievement is so satisfying that it's worth the pain," he told the paper. "This is the first time I've done it... but it won't be the last."
