[FAO] A Surprise birthday - Happy Birthday to Chennai

Yes it was on 22nd August 1639 that Chennai took shape

as a city when Francis Day, representative of the

East India company negotiated with Raja of Chandragiri

for lease of land initially for setting of a factory.

The deal was for a small stretch of land

(Fort St.George overlooking the Beach, the present day

Tamilnadu Secretariat)  but with the passage of time,

British influence grew in all directions and also saw the rise

of British power in India.

The rest is history.

In the beginning, Chennai was known as  Chennapatnam,

some time later it was rechristened Madras.

Of course the name Madras was so popular not only with the

British but with the local people. Of course no one can give

the correct  origins of the name Madras.

Some say it is a condensed version of Madrasa patnam,

the British fancied with the prefix retained Madras, leaving

patnam to its fate or as some say the name Madras came

from Madrasa or Muslim schools of learning.

Madras finally gave way to its old name and today

it is Chennai officially. Whatever may be the origins,

Chennai is the fourth largest city in India and one of the finest

Metro cities.

Once a fishing village, the City has transformed itself

in tune with the times.

There are a number of historic temples, churches, mosques,

great Universities/ educational institutions,  and a great

coastline.

The Marina Beach is the world's second largest beach.
